The combustion process in engines has always produced carbon deposits that buildup in the valves, injector and combustion chamber. Fuels with sufficient detergent additives have been responsible for dissolving and controlling the build-up of these deposits. A case where these additives are no longer contained in the proper concentrations in fuel and the ethanol or methanol concentration is further increased creates an entirely new problem for engines.
Vehicle engines made before 2003 suffer a situation where ethanol eats away at plastic and rubber seals and parts, dissolving them and creating problems over time. This means increased maintenance and the possibility of real damage over time.
Reduced cetane levels and low detergency in diesel fuels translates to poor fuel ignitability, increased deposits, and poor fuel economy.
